The number of American digital nomads surged to a record 17.3 million in 2023, according to the Digital Nomads Trends Report by MBO Partners.
This growth mirrors a global trend, with approximately 35 million digital nomads worldwide.
Per a news release in City Business, Digital nomads prioritize freedom and flexibility, working online while traveling across cities, countries, and continents.
Unlike remote workers who stay near their offices, digital nomads move frequently and do not seek permanent residency or work for local companies.
The release added that Daria Bachmann, a travel blogger known for her adventures, describes the lifestyle as enriching and challenging, requiring adaptation to new cultures and norms.
The MBO Partners report shows that while millennials and Gen Z make up a significant portion of digital nomads, older generations also increasingly adopt this lifestyle.
Per the release, Millennials account for 37%, Gen Z for 21%, and 42% are from Gen X or older, up from 36% in 2022.
The demographic also includes diverse family structures, with 53% being married or partnered and 25% traveling with children.
The report noted that Digital nomads typically work 40 hours weekly, balancing their professional and travel responsibilities.
